Recently, more than 20 foreign students from schools in and beyond Guizhou province visited Danzhai County in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong autonomous prefecture for a hands-on experience with batik. An inheritor of batik teaches foreign students how to draw patterns with wax and blue dye.

Batik, which originated during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD), is placed on the first national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006. Batik is a technique of resist-print dyeing applied to a whole cloth. It is made either by using homemade ladao, or the knife-like instrument, to draw patterns on the cloth, or by dipping melted wax on the cloth to form various patterns. The batik has been passed down through generations in the Miao ethnic group, which is an integral part of their ancient culture and history.
