Tongling white ginger is renowned for its crisp taste, tender flesh and nutritional and medicinal benefits. Tongling City in East China's Anhui Province has a history of growing white ginger for more than 2,000 years. In 2009, Tongling white ginger was granted geographical indication (GI) product protection. In November 2023, the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization included the "Tongling White Ginger Plantation System" on its list of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). This System not only has improved the ginger' s quality and output, but also has effectively promoted the ecological production and scale production. The planting area of white ginger in Tongling has been already set to hit 6,800 mu in 2024, an increase of 11.5 percent year-on-year.
