Shen Changyu met Johanne Bélisle, Commissioner of Patents, Registrar of Trademarks and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office

On June 8th, SIPO Commissioner Shen Changyu was invited to head a delegation to Canada and held talks with Paul Thompson, Associate Deputy Minister, Innovation, Science and Economic Development of Canada(ISED), and Johanne Bélisle, Commissioner of Patents, Registrar of Trademarks and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. They had in-depth discussion on the issues of the latest development of the IPR efforts made by China and Canada, related initiatives concerning IPR-driven innovation, IPR public services and the promotion of the public awareness of IPR. After concluding their meeting, the two offices signed Cooperative Work Plan 2018- 2019 and renewed the PPH agreement.

Shen Changyu noted that since two sides signed the MOU in 2013, China and Canada have seen constantly growing cooperation on IPR, reaped productive results in high-level exchanges, patent examination and PPH pilot projects. He hoped that both sides can further strengthen bilateral cooperation to create better IPR environment for the companies and IPR users of both countries. Paul Thompson and Johanne Bélisle both noted that China has rich experiences in implementing intellectual property strategies, encouraging business start-ups and innovation as well as promoting the application of scientific and technological achievements. As a result, Canada stands ready to continue its practical cooperation on IPR with China, develop closer relationship and work to provide better services for the general public of both sides.

During their visit in Canada, with the support of Canada China Business Council (CCBC), the two offices held IPR round table and made a detailed introduction of China’s fruits on IPR protection, IPR public services, awareness promotion and China-Canada PPH cooperation to Canadian International Affairs Department and other government departments as well as IPR services agency and the delegates of industry community.
