Vice-premier Wu Yi of the State Council met with Nancy Peloni, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress and other senior members of the House in Washington D.C. on May 23, 2007. Both sides exchanged views on Sino-U.S. economic cooperation, IP protection, Sultan's Darfur and other issues.
Wu Yi said that Sino-U.S. relations are one of the most important bilateral relations in the world. In recent years, with the joint efforts of both sides, a good development momentum has been maintained in the bilateral relations and cooperation in all the areas has constantly been expanded and deepened. Further enhancing mutual confidence and cooperation conforms to the fundamental interests of the peoples of our two countries. She hopes that the U. S. House of Representatives will become a driving force for the development of Sino-U.S. relations.
In her briefing to Peloni about the Second Sino-U.S. Strategic Economic Dialogue, Wu Yi stressed that economic and trade cooperation between the two countries has developed rapidly and it is unavoidable that some frictions and differences may occur in the process of rapid development. She said that both sides should take their mutual concerns into consideration following the principle of development, equality and mutual-benefit and that the relevant problems be resolved properly through dialogue and friendly consultation. Dialogue is better than confrontation.
Pelosi and other members of the U.S. House of Representatives stated that U.S.-China relations are very important to both countries as well as to the world. There are common interests between the U.S. and China in the aspects of international security and stability. Whatever differences may occur, we should seek for a bright future with joint efforts, and develop a broad vista in the economic, cultural and diplomatic fields. Both sides should enhance exchange in an open and straightforward manner. The U.S. House of Representatives hopes that an exchange mechanism be established with the National People's Congress of China, in order to enhance communication and enhance understanding. Members of the U.S. House of Representatives wish the Beijing Olympics Games a complete success, so as to make contribution to the friendship between the athletes of all the nations and the peoples of the world.
On the same day, Wu Yi also met with the members of the Funding Committee of the House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress and held discussions with them on the problems that exist in the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.
