President Hu Jintao attended the outreach session of the Group of Eight Industrialized Countries Summit (G8 Summit) with the five developing world's leaders -- China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico in a northern German town of Heiligendamm on 8th June 2007. In his speech at the meeting, President Hu said, it is crucial for the international community to set up a new concept of interest and a fresh model of cooperation by working for necessary financial assistance, better IPR protection and more active role of governments and enterprises.
In order to meet the Kyoto Protocol's goal of emission cut, Hu said, a new concept of interest and a fresh model of cooperation are important for the international community who should work together more actively. He also called for enhanced R&D efforts in and promotion of technology of more effective use of fossil fuel, energy saving technology, environment-friendly technology and recyclable energy technology, which are both affordable and usable for developing countries with necessary financial assistance, better IPR protection and more active role of governments and enterprises.
Hu emphasized that the Clean Development Mechanism set by the Kyoto Protocol, as a win-win option, which can help the developed countries to fulfill their commitment to emission cuts and is constructive for the sustainable development of the developing countries, should play an even bigger role in the international cooperation to meet the challenges of climate change.
Hu also noted that China will continue to, based on its people-first model of fully coordinated sustainable development, seek rapid and sound economic growth and social progress, aiming at improved productivity, better live and ecologically sound environment. While the CO2 emission per capita in China accounts only one third of the average amount in developed countries, the Chinese government has paid great attention to the climate change by adopting a series of policies and tactics to reduce the green house gas emission. Hu reiterated China's firm commitment to sustainable development through its continued participation in the international cooperation to meet the climate change challenge and its joint efforts with other developing countries within the framework of South-to-South Coopration.
