Liu Binjie: Multiple Cooperation Encouraged Between Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland

On the afternoon of August 21, Liu Binjie, Director of the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) and the National Copyright Administration met Frederick Ma Si-hang, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and his party, pointing out that as the cooperation between Hong Kang and Chinese mainland is very wide, the two parties can conduct multi-level cooperation in copyright protection, industry development and market expansion.

Liu noted that with the deepening of China's reform and opening up to the outside world, the relations between Chinese mainland and Hong Kong in publication trade and IP protection are becoming closer. IP protection needs international cooperation, beyond the limitations of countries and regions, in order to jointly crack down on piracy. Hong Kong is a multicultural society, which needs to strengthen cooperation with the mainland in areas such as development and market. In recent years, the two parties did well in fighting against disc marine smugglings. Chinese mainland's work of IP protection started at a comparatively later date, but more efforts are being made in this regard. It is unrealistic for China to complete the work that took western developed countries several hundreds of years to finish within only several years. China needs time to gradually improve its IP protection system.

Frederick Ma Si-hang expressed his thanks to the GAPP for its supports to Hong Kong Book Fair. He noted that Hong Kong attaches great importance to IP protection and he hoped to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the mainland's press and publication administrative departments and customs.

Li Baozhong, Director General of the Publication Market Supervision Department of GAPP, Xu Chao, Deputy Director General of the Copyright Department of GAPP and Chen Yingming, Vice Director of the Foreign Cooperation and Exchange Department of GAPP attended the meeting.
