Wen Jiabao: IPR Protection a Requirement for China's Development

On August 27, Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao met with the visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing respectively. Hu noted that China is ready to make joint efforts with Germany to push forward their partnership that shoulders global responsibilities. "The two countries should broaden their concrete cooperation in various fields including trade, clean and renewable energy, and air purification." Wen also discussed with Merkel on issues such as food security, climate change and IPR protection.

Merkel indicated that Germany attaches great importance to its relations with China and hopes to further deepen bilateral ties.

On the issue of IPR protection, Wen stressed that IPR protection is not only an issue between countries, but also a requirement for China itself in its development. China would take all efficient measures, especially legal measures, to protect IPR.

Merkel said China had made positive efforts to protect IPR and she believed China had set up a sound legal base for IPR protection and had made great achievements. Germany would like to continue deepening bilateral cooperation in this sector on the basis of mutual respect.

After the meeting, Wen and Merkel met representatives of Chinese and Germany entrepreneurs, attended a signing ceremony for bilateral cooperative documents including two framework agreements on the establishment of two working groups in the fields of environmental protection and energy, and met the press.
