Sources from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China on September 15 show that during the 11th Five-Year Plan period, the number of PGI (protected geographical indication) products in China will exceed 1,200, with product value reaching 800 billion yuan.
A geographical indication is a name or sign used on certain products or which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin. According to WTO definition, a product’s quality, reputation or other characteristics can be determined by where it comes from. Thus, products with geographical indications possess certain qualities and enjoy certain reputations due to their geographical origins.
