The latest statistics from SIPO indicate that in the first half of this year, SIPO totally handles 345,569 patent applications, a year-on-year increase of 28.5 percent.

A total of 290,208 applications are from domestic applicants, up 34.1 percent compared with the same period of time, which is 216,473, accounting for 84 percent of the total applications. Applications from foreign countries number 55,361, increasing 5.5 percent compared with the same period of last year, which is 52,453, accounting for 16 percent of the total. The number of applications of patent of invention hits 132,088, up 26.6 percent compared with the same period of last year’s 104,341; a total of 96,827 applications are for patent of utility model, growing 29.8 percent than last year’s 74,733; SIPO also handles 116,654 applications of patent of design, increasing 29.8 percent compared with last year’s 89,852 applications. The proportions of applications of patent of invention, patent of utility model and design are 38.2 percent, 28percent and 33.8 percent respectively.

In the first half this year, SIPO totally grants 191,530 patents, 14.2 percent higher than last year’s 167,750. Of the number, 163,827 are from the domestic, up 15.2 percent than last year’s 142,264; SIPO also grants 27,703 patents to foreign countries, up 8.7 percent compared with last year’s 25,486. Of the three kinds of patents granted, patents for invention reach 41,752, up 30.3 percent; patents for utility model hit 78,917, and patents of design number 70,861, up 21.4 percent and 0.2 percent year on year respectively. The proportions of granted patents of invention, model utility and design are 21.8 percent, 41.2 percent and 37 percent respectively.

After China promulgates the Compendium of China National IP Strategy, SIPO constantly increases its capacity of IPR creation, and the growth of patent applications starts to enter a new round of acceleration. Service invention creation gains high growth impetus, indicating the innovation system with enterprises as the main body pays more attentions to the practice of transforming the achievements of independent innovation into IPRs.

By the end of June 2008, SIPO totally handles 4,373,853 patent applications, including 3,604,563 from the domestic and 769,290 from the foreign countries, accounting for 82.4 percent and 17.6 percent respectively; the numbers of applications of patent of invention hit 1,466,764, patent of utility model, 1,568,018, and patent of design, 1,339,071, accounting for 33.5 percent, 35.8 percent and 30.6 percent respectively of the total number. By the end of June 2008, SIPO totally grants 2,280,816 patents, including 1,954,206 from the domestic and 326,610 from foreign countries, accounting for 85.7 percent and 14.3 percent respectively; meanwhile, SIPO also grants 406,203 patents of invention, 1,067,181 patents of utility model and 807,432 patents of design, accounting for 17.8 percent, 46.8 percent and 35.4 percent respectively.
