2009 FRAMEWORK FOR ACTION On Bilateral Cooperation Between SIPO and UKIPO Signed in London

 

The UK-China summit between visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is held in London, Britain, Feb. 2, 2009. After the talks, SIPO Commissioner Tian Lipu and Ian Fletcher, Chief Executive of the Intellectual Property Office, sign the 2009 FRAMEWORK FOR ACTION On Bilateral Cooperation Between SIPO and UKIPO at the Office of Prime Minister, London.

 

The Framework is signed based on the consensus of talks between leaders of SIPO and UKIPO in Beijing on January 22. In order to deepen the cooperation between the two offices and encourage innovation of enterprises, the agreement covers patent communication and cooperation, promotes and encourages the use and understanding of our respective Intellectual Property systems by Chinese and UK businesses, and discusses new measures on further training exchange and development cooperation.

 

The two sides highly appreciate the signature of the agreement, which is concerned as the milestone and new starting point of the cooperation between SIPO and UKIPO.

 

Thereafter, David Lammy, Minister of State for Intellectual Property, meets with SIPO Commissioner Tian Lipu, when Ian Fletcher, Chief Executive of the Intellectual Property Office is present. During the talks, David Lammy expresses his pleasure that the cooperation can step into a new height under the leadership of Commissioner Tian Lipu. He says, "The agreements announced today will help to make it quicker and easier for businesses in our two countries to better protect and exploit their ideas. They will improve the global IP system to make it effective, efficient and accessible to all innovative companies."

 

Commissioner Tian Lipu says, "China and UK are facing similar challenges regarding the development of intellectual property. We are glad to continue enhancing communication and sharing experience by signing the agreement." 

 

 "The Framework are very important to both UK and Chinese business. We will assist in translating each other's innovation and creativity into economic growth and social benefit. The Framework will also promote greater awareness to business of how Intellectual Property works," says Ian Fletcher.

 

This new Framework will be followed up with a series of staff exchanges and joint UK/China outreach events to business over the coming year.
