SIPO Survey: 70% Patents Go Beyond Drawing Board

A recent SIPO survey reveals how patents are in used in China.  Many patented technologies today are invented for commercialization, evidenced by specific techniques accompanying them, giving rise to high commercialization rate, 70.2%.  Such high rate, however, lives side by side with the difficulty of commercialization bothering individual inventors.

According to the survey, commercialization rates of different kinds of patents are: 52.4% for invention, 61.1% for utility model and 84.7% for design.  Rates categorized by types of patentees are: 86.4% for businesses, 33.9% for universities, 56.8% for research institutes and 41.3% for non-service inventors (not inclusive of business owners and managers filing in their own names).

Among the uncommercialized patents, 26.4% are deemed technological reserve.  Businesses treat 60% of their uncommercialized patents as reserve.  This might indicate awareness of patent strategy and sustainable development is budding among Chinese businesses and innovators.
