The 6th IP5 Heads Meeting Held in U.S.

 

On June 3-5, Tian Lipu, Commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) led a delegation to attend the 6th IP5 Heads Meeting in Cupertino of the United States. Francis Gurry, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization, also attended the meeting as an observer. The meeting was hosted by Teresa Stanek Rea, Acting Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

At the meeting, heads of the five offices from China, the United States, Europe, Japan and South Korea listened to reports about the latest developments and achievements of cooperation between the five offices and work plans for the next step. The heads also had exchanges and discussions on many topics including Global Dossier, global classification initiative, patent information policy, patent prosecution highway, and patent coordination and timeliness, etc.

At the meeting, Tian introduced the latest developments of the “cloud patent examination solutions”, and he also announced that the test system will be released recently. He invited the present directors to join the testing. Representatives of the five offices appreciated developments of the “cloud patent examination solutions”, and they showed great interest in the testing system. They said efforts must be made to conduct broader exchanges and cooperation on the solutions.

During the meeting, the 10th IP5 Deputy Heads Meeting was also held, and Li Yuguang, Deputy Commissioner of the SIPO, attended the meeting.

Prior to this, the 2nd IP5 business-heads meeting had been held. Industry representatives from China, the United States, Europe, Japan and South Korea had discussions with the five heads on many topics of common interest. Representatives from the Patent Protection Association of China, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., ZTE Corp., Datang Telecom Technology Co. Ltd. and Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. joined the meeting.

The next IP5 Heads Meeting will be held in June 2014 in Busan of South Korea.
