On July 8 2003, Chicago-based Professor Patrick Whitney, Dean of Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology (www.id.iit.edu) visited the Office and met with Mr. Lu Guoliang, Deputy Director General of International Cooperation Department, Mr. Gong Baomin, Deputy Director General of Design Examination Department and Mr. Pu Fang, Deputy Director General of Automation Department. Both sides exchanged opinions on future cooperation in the design field and design patent data. 

The Institute of Design of IIT, one of the leading design schools in the world, is in close relationship with the Institute of Art of Tsinghua University, Lenovo Group and Hong-Kong-based Gold Peak Industrial Corp. in conducting research projects.  Prof. Whitney visited the Office twice earlier this year and met with Deputy Commissioner Wu Boming while exploring the possibilities of joint case study of design's impact on industry competition with the Design Examination Department.
