China Biodiversity-Related IP Information Network Officially Opened

 

On May 22, the World Biodiversity Day, "China Biodiversity-Related IP Information  Network"  (www.biodivip.gov.cn)  is opened. The web site is a node of Chinese national biodiversity information platform and a window displaying IP protection of biodiversity in China. The site consists of eight major columns, i.e., Background Information, Related Intellectual Property Policies, Laws and Regulations, Hot Issues, Information of Meetings and Working Documents of WIPO, Related Information, Search Links, Related Links, Contact Us.  The web site will timely report the update of meetings on biodiversity and genetic resources organized by the international organizations, for example, WIPO and UPOV.  Other areas it will cover are the development of biodiversity IP protection in the world and academic research on intellectual property protection of genetic resources and traditional knowledge, patent protection of new varieties of animal plants and so on.

SIPO Commissioner Wang Jinchuan wrote a summary for the opening of the web site. He stressed that "China is one of the countries possessing the most abundant biological resources in the world. The main task of the web site is to strengthen the management of the persistent utilization of the nation's biological resources, consummate the legal environment construction concerning the biological resources utilization, improve people's awareness of IP protection in respect of the exploitation and utilization, research findings of state biological resources, especially in respect of the right ownership and benefit distribution of research findings accomplished through international cooperation." He wished that China Biodiversity-Related IP Information Network would become a window for publicizing IP laws and regulations and acquiring the relevant patent technical information. People from all walks of life are welcomed to visit the site.
