Zhongguancun Applies for More Patents

There is a magical place in Beijing, with 150 invention patents for every 10,000 people. That is an astonishing number, matching the number in Silicon Valley. After all, in Beijing has only 40 patents for every 10,000 people, and the whole country only 4.9. The place is Zhongguancun Science Park.

The park's strong innovation ability and efforts in intellectual property contribute to the number of invention patents in Zhongguancun. With the establishment of the Intellectual Property Street, the core areas in Zhongguancun will launch a series of exclusive IP services. The park will launch a foundation for global IP rights protection, hold press conferences for leading IP, and bring evaluation systems into the regional development capital fund.

A preliminary startup team has to spend time and money on legal procedures to get industry or commercial registrations or patents. Zhiguoguo.com provides such legal services for free or with discounted fees. The submission and guidance are online, which saves entrepreneurs from spending time in traffic or in long queues. The Intellectual Property Street officially launched in the core area of the science park on October 11. The street has more than 700 IP service providers, including Zhiguoguo.com. More than 700 institutions are located in the in the area of less than 10 square kilometers.

The street accumulates IP service institutions and provides convenience to entrepreneurs. At the same time, the IP services in the science park are also entering the global market.

One company, based in Beijing's Haidian District, represented Chinese medical equipment businesses in a Section 337 lawsuit. The Section 337 focuses on the investment of goods imported to the US that may infringe on IP or lead to unfair competition. Many global brands, including Samsung Electronics, have been involved in Section 337 cases.

Haidian District IP Office's foundation in the US offered help and became the major force defending the corporations in the lawsuit.

"Apart from the overseas foundations in the US and UK, we will push forward the establishment of foundations in Germany, Finland, and Japan," said Wang Ying, director of the Zhongguancun Science Park Haidain Sub-park IP Office and the Haidian District IP Office.

"Our goal is establishing such overseas right protection foundations in all the countries we deal with in a few years. This way, the corporations will feel stronger self-confidence in the global market," added Wang.

The number of new applications for invention patents in Haidian District took up 46.3 percent in the first months of this year, and patent licensing increased 45.4 percent.

Apart from Haidian District, the overall science park has an amazing number of patent applications. Corporations based in the science park applied for total of 42,404 invention patents by the end of August, which took up 63.5 percent of the city's total.
