State-owned coal groups in Shanxi province spent more than 9 billion yuan last year on R&D that resulted in three invention patents for Datong Coal Mine Group and 12 for Jincheng Anthracite Mining Group.

The province's large coal groups have also forged scientific relationships with more than 80 colleges and research institutes nationwide to sharpen their technological edge.
