Primary and secondary students in Wuhan were awarded 5,700 patents from 2002 to 2010 to rank at the forefront of the nation among their peers.

Most of the inventions were design and utility models closely connected with daily life, such as a retractable basketball stand, energy-saving light pen and light-controlled doors.

The city's schools encourage inventions by providing laboratories, instruments, training and student associations.
