Shanghai: Jail and Fines for Online Games

Two young men have been fined and given jail sentences by the Huangpu district court for infringing on the copyright of the online game King of Pirates.

Zheng Xin and Zhou Xiong, who failed to find jobs after graduation, knew each from playing online games. Zheng suggested they build a copycat online games to make money, and Zhou agreed.

They acquired the source code for King of Pirates, made a few simple changes to develop three similar online games and rented two servers to operate them.

In less than a year, they had nearly 10,000 registered players and earned more than 60,000 yuan. They were arrested in March by Wuxi police in Jiangsu province.
