The Kunshan People's Court recently sentenced a defendant surnamed Wei to three and a half years in prison and levied a fine of 80,000 yuan after he was convicted of illegally offering copyrighted software and books for download on his website.
Wei charged more than 100,000 yuan ($15,440) in fees for the unauthorized downloads.
The court found that 15 publishing houses were damaged. Evidence presented showed nearly 300 books were pirated and 200 contracts between publishers and copyright owners had been violated.
