Recently, Guizhou Provincial People's Government issues the Opinion on Strengthening the Work of Geographical Indication of Specialty Agriculture Products to Promote the Economic Development of Specialty Agriculture Products of Guizhou Province (hereafter referred to as the Opinion), establishing China's first Overall Coordination Mechanism of geographical indication work.

The Opinion puts forward that in the work of promoting the geographical indication of specialty agriculture products, the overall coordinating orgnizations of geographical indication of various levels should strengthen coordination and communication, take into consideration the factors such as the product reputation, industrialization level, development prospect, supervision facilitation and the linkage between the characteristics and quality of a product with the geography or human culture, and properly select the application channels and application subject of geographical indication of specialty agriculture products. The criteria and contents should be determined by Guizhou Provincial IP Administration after consultation with related departments.

The Opinion clarifies that Guizhou Provincial IP Administration should take the lead in formulating the Suggestion Directory of Geographical Indication Protection of Specialty Agriculture Products of Guizhou Province with such departments as agriculture, industry and commerce and quality inspection. Various regions should highlight key areas and steadily promote the application work for specialty agriculture products that meet the criteria of geographical indication protection.

Meanwhile, the Opinion also puts forward clear requirements in strengthening supervision on the geographical indications of specialty agriculture products, intensifying the protection function of geographical indication system, establishing incentive and supporting mechanisms and enhancing the efforts of training talents of geographical indication.
