Researchers in the Tibet autonomous region last week said that they had completed more than 80 percent of a Chinese translation of The Epic of King Gesar. It is widely considered the world's longest composition. Twenty-five Chinese volumes of the millennium-old epic have been completed. According to the Tibetan Academy of Social Sciences, which leads the project, 15 have been published. It is aiming to publish 30 volumes. The epic, which was listed among world intangible cultural heritage in 2009, tells of how an 11th-century Tibetan demigod king conquered his enemies and helped the people.
