WIPO Director General Lauds Patenting Momentum in China

The U.S., Europe and Northeast Asia are the three major users of the PCT system, and China is becoming a leading player in global patenting activities, said WIPO Director General Francis Gurry at the fifth China Patent Week held on November 9. After attending the opening ceremony of the event, Gurry entertained an exclusive interview with the China Intellectual Property News and wrote a message for our readers.

Gurry highly shows his appreciation to patenting activities in China. "In the past ten years, China's upward journey in patenting is gradually changing the global patenting landscape". In 2010, China filed PCT application more than France and UK combined, which might be one of the biggest changes. Currently, U.S., Europe and Northeast Asia patronize the PCT system most. In terms of patent commercialization, China is moving faster than the other two NE Asian countries, Japan and South Korea, and is building up its leadership in global patenting activities, according to Gurry.

"On the occasion of the fifth China Patent Week, I entered my warmest greetings to all readers of China IP News. The development of intellectual property in China has been remarkable and has continued significantly and positively to the development of innovation in the economy. Innovation, in turn, has been a major source of economic growth and will continue to contribute to job creation, competitiveness and improvements in the quality of life", said Gurry in his message for CIP News.
