Though the 2010 Shanghai Expo has lowered its curtain, IPR protection for the event refuses to unwind. As of November 15, China had handled 1,498 violations against Expo symbols, according to the Expo's Coordination Bureau.
Data from the Bureau shows that it has deposited 63 symbols with the Trade Mark Office under the Sate Administration for Industry and Commerce and 58 with the General Administration of Customs, obtained 227 trademark registrations for its emblem, mascot and other items, gains exclusive right for the Expo special symbol on 45 categories of goods and services. All these contributed to the integrated right system including Expo exclusive right, trademark, special mark right and copyright etc. Up to now, Shanghai Expo Symbol Administration office has received 656 requests to use the symbols and concluded 1,498 Shanghai Expo violations on the basis of the system.
