This year witnessed the 25th anniversary of China’s accession to the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property. Administered by WIPO, Paris Convention is one of the most important intellectual property treaties.
Joining the treaty marked China’s high stance in participating the international community of IPR protection. In the past 25 years, remarkable progress has been made. Between April 1985 and January 2010, 935,598 patents from abroad were filed and 442,335 were granted. Since 1994 when becoming PCT state member, China has been a promising comer, with filings up from only 103 in 1994, to 4,000 in 2006 (8th) to 8,000 in 2009 (5th). As of September 30, 2009, Chinese companies and individuals had filed cumulative 9,477 trademark registrations abroad, remaining 8th in annual Madrid international registrations for four consecutive years and ranking the top in developing countries.
