A press conference hosted by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) revealed September 16, China had examined 1.005 million trademark applications, up 153%. With sweeping No.1s of numbers of applications, applications examined and living registered trademarks, China claims to be the top trademark powerhouse in the world.
According to Li Jianchang, Director General of the Trademark Office of SAIC, carving the "1 million plus" as a new start point, his office aims to implement the outline of the national IP strategy, in particular the trademark part.
In 2008, China finished examination of 750,000 trademark applications against the numbers of other major authorities, U.S. 400,000, Japan 119,000, EU 80,000 and France 74,000.
