BOCOG Disbanded, Protection of Olympic IPRs Still China's Duty

Though the Organizing Committee for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG) is officially disbanded, this has no bearing on protection of Olympic IPRs in China, said an official representing the organization.  Under Chinese legislations, there are two right holders of Olympic symbols instead of two post BOCOG, namely the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC).  Also under IOC rules, daily management of Olympic IPRs within the COC jurisdiction falls in the hands of the COC.

According to the host city agreement, BOCOG is bound to transfer all IPRs created during preparation and hosting of the Games to IOC.  That is exactly what BOCOG did recently when signing transfer agreement with IOC on copyright, trademark, Olympic symbols and other IPRs.  The Trademark Office under the State Administration for Industry and Commerce changed relevant registrations of right holder accordingly from BOCOG to IOC.
