Trademark Applications Hit 380,000 in First Half

According to the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, applications for trademark registration nationwide in the first half of 2009 hit 380,000, up 7.7%.  By June 30, 2009, China's number of applications for trademark registration reached 6.77 million despite the impact of the international financial crisis. There are 2.4 million registered trademarks in total, ranking first in the world and defending this honor for seven years in a row since 2002.

Trademark filings gained its momentum ever since China restored national trademark registration in 1979.  The number of applications exploded from 26,000 in 1980 to 766,000 in 2006.  In addition, China has become the most designated country in the Madrid Union.
