(Xinhua News Agency) On July 9, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao presides over the Executive Meeting of the State Council, examining and adopting in principle the important scientific and technological project of breeding new transgenic organism varieties. According to the meeting, the goal of implementing the important special project is to maintain a batch of genes with important application value and independent IPRs, so as to supply solid supports for the sustainable development of China’s agriculture.

According to the meeting, implementing the important scientific and technological project of breeding new transgenic organism varieties is of great strategic significance to strengthening the independent innovation capacity in agriculture sector, lifting China’s level of biology breeding, increasing agricultural production efficiency and farmers’ income, and lifting China’s international competitiveness in agricultural sector. The goal of the important project is to maintain a batch of genes with important application value and independent IPRs, breed a batch of important anti-disease and anti-insect new transgenic organism varieties of stress resistance, high quality, high production and high efficiency and strengthen the research on agricultural transgenic organism and lift the general industrialization level, providing solid scientific and technological supports for the sustainable development of China’s agriculture.

The meeting points out that thanks to the scientific, democratic and strict deliberation, the special implementation plan has become basically mature. Various related departments should fully understand the importance and urgency of the important project and further improve the plan to spare no time to carry it out.
