Unauthorized Online Broadcast of Olympic Games in Crosshairs

In a press conference on combating unauthorized broadcast of the Olympic Games, the National Copyright Administration (NCA), Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and State Administration of Radio, Film and Television laid out their plan to target unauthorized online broadcasting of all Olympic events. NCA has already enjoined some web site from playing Olympic torch relay without consent. The crackdown is the first such official action in China against illegal online broadcasting.

The exclusive broadcasting rights of the 29th Olympic Games in China's mainland and Macao SAR, covering both Internet and mobile platform, have been granted to China Central Television (CCTV) by the International Olympic Committee. No other media may broadcast without authorization.

The three ministries also announced the issuance of their joint Circular of Strictly Prohibiting Illegally Broadcasting Olympic Games and Related Activities through Internet.
