Two IP-Related National Standards to Be Effective on June 1

Two recommendatory national standards formulated by SIPO, the Basic Glossary of Intellectual Property Document and Information and the Assortment and Code of Intellectual Property Document and Information, will come into effect on June 1 after being approved by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Standardization Administration. The two standards are published on January 14 this year. This is the first time for China to announce the national standards in IP sector.

With the development of China’s IP cause, the problems such as the lack of standardized basic glossary and diversified term meanings emerge, which influence the accurate exchanges and utilizations of IP documents and information. Meanwhile, the existing assorting rules cannot effectively assort document and information in IP sector, which also influence the processing, handling, exchange and utilization of IP documents and information. Thus, it is urgent to formulate corresponding glossary standards and assortment standards according to the real practices of China’s IP work. Under the circumstance, SIPO suggests and drafts the two national standards.

The Basic Glossary consists of and standardizes 105 basic terms in IP sector and unifies the Chinese and English expressions of these terms in the form of standard. Consisting four sections of General IP Glossary, Patent Glossary, Trademark Glossary and Copyright Glossary, the Basic Glossary is applicable in areas related to IP documents and information. The Assortment and Code works out the assorting system in the method of digital coding in light of the characteristics of documents and information in IP sector. Consisting 139 sorts in five sections of general introduction of intellectual property, patent, trademark, copyright and other IPR or related protection themes, the Assortment and Code is applicable in assorting and indexing IP documents and information, but not applicable in assorting patent documents and trademark bulletins.

The two standards are currently recommended to use in IP system nationwide.
