SAIC Affirms 228 Well-Known Trademarks in 2008

Up to date, the Trademark Office and the Trademark Appeal Board of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) have affirmed 228 well-known trademarks in 2008, of which, 136 are affirmed by Trademark Office in trademark management cases, 33 by Trademark Office in trademark dissent cases and the rest 59 by Trademark Appeal Board in trademark dispute cases.

The 228 well-known trademarks include 212 goods trademarks and 16 service trademarks. Of the well-known trademarks, 204 are owned by Chinese mainland enterprises, three belong to enterprises of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, three are registered by enterprises of Taiwan region and 18 go to foreign enterprises. The 204 trademarks of Chinese mainland enterprises include 40 agriculture-related trademarks (including four trademarks of geographical indications) and 18 trademarks related to equipment manufacturing industry.

A large number of well-known trademarks affirmed this year are very popular to consumers or the public such as PICC (People’s Insurance Company of China), Baidu (an internet search engine), Jiefang (truck brand), Hongqi (sedan brand) and JDSY (Jinda Shengyuan Fertilizer). Meanwhile, the affirmation to Qianxi Chinese Chestnut, Zhangzhou Narcissus and its pictures, GUTIANYINERand its pictures, ANJIWHITETEAand its pictures increases the number of China’s trademarks of geographical indications to 14.

In addition, Nokia (Finland) is affirmed as the well-known trademark in China, increasing the number of countries and regions with foreign well-known trademarks in China to 14.
