China Customs to Adopt IPR Protection Plan for Beijing Olympics

On November 1st, China Customs Office at Xiamen Gaoqi Airport seized 10 sets of Friendlies' Trip Olympics, a cartoon series movie for 2008 Beijing Olympics, during its regular check to passengers. This is first time for Chinese customs departments to seize audio-video products which infringing IPR of 2008 Beijing Olympics at airports.

Before this, the Huangpu Customs Office seized over 2,000 copies of calendars with the logo of 2008 Beijing Olympics printed, and Dalian Customs found 930 key rings with Friendlies symbols, Gongbei customs office seized 300 pirated Friendlies, and . Guangzhou customs office even found illegal mould for producing Friendlies.

Chinese Customs has formulated a detailed plan for protecting IPR of 2008 Olympics to guarantee the IPR protection of whole progress. A senior official from the China Customs said that to fulfill the protection to Olympics IPR was not only the need of protecting Olympic logo, but also the need of enforcing law enforcement to IPR. "During the 2008 Beijing Olympics period, China will attract worldwide attention, and numerous foreign visitors will come for Olympics. China will hold either a successful Olympics, or a clean Olympics. Fair play is not only a slogan at sports competition, but also a principle out of the sports. So we will try to crack down any piracy and infringement behaviors."

In the plan, China Customs will make a declaration to regulate the management to any infringement in individual carriage or post, to enforce the supervision to any imports and exports related to the Olympics or individuals, and also to publicize knowledge about IPR protection to all overseas tourists. Meanwhile, China Customs also suggested organizing a joint action to regulate domestic market during the Olympics period.
