The Beijing Organizing Committee of Olympic Games (BOCOG) signed the copyright document with the Music Copyright Society of China (MCSC) on November 8 in Beijing for 2008 Beijing Olympics, and at the same time, declared its IPR protection plan for Olympic music.
It is estimated that the Beijing Olympic Games will need some 10,000 music works during the Olympics period, in opening and closing ceremonies, for example. Most of them will come from the undergoing a song and music selection for 2008 Beijing Olympics.
According to the Copyright Law of China and the international practice, BOCOG needs other approvals from copyright holders. MCSC, member of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (ICSAC), is trying its best to help BOCOG for reaching approving agreements with other members of the ICSAC.
As noted in the plan, BOCOG must be granted by MCSC for using these music and pay for that. Being the copyright owner of music works, BOCOG authorizes MCSC to manage the relevant IP affairs, such as the right of performance, and right of copy, to guarantee the legal use of the Olympic music and songs.
The Olympic Slogan, Emblem, Mascot, Sport Image, Torch Relay Mark, songs and music are organic components of Olympic IPR. As there will be a large number and variety of music works used at the Olympic Games, copyright protection for them have been a major part of IP work in the Games. The cooperation between BOCOG and MCSC demonstrates their high respect to IPR, and the IP protection of music works will a highlight in overall IPR protection in 2008 Beijing Olympics.
