China Customs recently received the 2007 Special Contribution Award for Cracking Down on Counterfeits and Piracies from the World Customs Organization (WCO). Michel Danet, WCO Secretary General, granted the award to the delegation of General Administration of the Customs of China (GACC) for its outstanding achievements in fighting against IPR infringements.
By the end of August 2007, a total of 5,332 enterprises had filed applications for recordation of customs IPR protection in GACC, involving 11,352 IPRs, and till the end of March of 2007, GACC and its branches across China had dealt with more than 8,400 IPR infringement cases, with a total of value more than 1 billion Chinese yuan. Since 2000, the number of such cases investigated by Chinese customs has increased more than 30 percent each year.
Moreover, Chinese customs' progress in IPR protection has also won itself wide reorganization from by related parties. The Brand Protection Committee of the Chinese Association of Foreign-Invested Enterprises gives high appreciation to GACC's law enforcement work in IPR protection, saying that the protection method and process are transparent and just, while the results are notable and satisfying. In 2006, the Global Coalition Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy granted its annual award to the Chinese Customs; on January 26, 2007, the International Customs Day, WCO entitled 15 Chinese customs officials working in IPR protection as Outstanding Law Enforcing Customs Officials.
