On August 22, the 103rd birthday of Comrade Deng Xiaoping, the Central Committee of Chinese Communist Youth League, All-China Youth Federation, All-China Students Federation and National Working Committee of Chinese Young Pioneers held a ceremony to award the Fourth Youth Scientific and Technological Innovation Prize at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Wang Zhaoguo, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the 10th National People's Congress, and State Councilor Chen Zhili met the prizewinners and gave out awards to them. At the ceremony, Wang unveiled the logo for the 10th Challenge Cup National Contest for University Students' After-Class Scientific and Technological Academic Work. Chen presented the flag for China Youth Scientific and Technological Innovation Summer Camp.
Deng was concerned with the healthy growth of the youngsters in China and stressed on the fostering of their innovation spirits and capacity in his lifetime. At Deng's 100th birthday in 2004, Deng's kinfolks, according to his last wish, donated all his payment for the books he wrote to the Central Committee of Chinese Communist Youth League, All-China Youth Federation, All-China Students Federation and National Working Committee of Chinese Young Pioneers to initiate the China Youth Scientific and Technological Innovation Awarding Foundation to specially encourage China's youngsters to make scientific and technological innovations. The foundation established China Youth Scientific and Technological Innovation Prize for university, middle school and primary school students. The prize is the lofty honor for Chinese youngsters, and this year awarding is the fourth term of prize.
The winning students this year are fully developed in moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic education, with special potentials in scientific and technological innovation. They are active in participating in scientific and technological innovation activities and show vigorous enthusiasm and huge potentials in professional knowledge studying and scientific and technological innovation. Some of them have brought forward their unique and innovative views in academic and hi-tech fields through publishing thesis at domestic and foreign key periodicals; some have made outstanding breakthroughs in inventions and have obtained national patents with notable social and economic benefits; and some have made notable achievements in some influential national and international competitions such as the Challenge Cup National Contest for University Students' After-Class Scientific and Technological Academic Work and the National Creativity Contest for Youngsters. They are the excellent representatives of China's youth who are engaged in scientific and technological innovation, reflecting their spirits of upholding sciences, making innovation and boldly practicing.
The ceremony was presided by Yang Yue, Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Youth League and President of All-China Youth Federation. China Disabled Persons' Federation Chairman Deng Pufang spoke at the ceremony on behalf of Deng Xiaoping's kinfolks. More than 400 people, including Deng Xiaoping's kinfolks Deng Lin and Deng Rong, leaders from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Party History Research Center of the CPC Central Committee, China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and student representatives from Beijing's universities and colleges, attended the ceremony.
In order to strengthen scientific and technological innovation education to the youth, the Central Committee of Chinese Communist Youth League, All-China Youth Federation, All-China Students Federation and National Working Committee of Chinese Young Pioneers, financed by China Youth Scientific and Technological Innovation Awarding Foundation, will continue organize all the prizewinners to attend the China Youth Scientific and Technological Innovation Summer Camp this year. Following the ceremony, the students will exchanges views with scientists, listen to scientific and technological academic reports, watch the film the Making of My France Time and visit science and technology museums. The film the Making of My France Time shows Deng Xiaoping's experience of working and studying in France when he was young.
