Entrusted by the Legal Affairs Department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), the Beijing Lawyers' Association will recruit 350 lawyers for the provision of legal service of the Olympic Games. The main content of the work of the Olympic legal volunteers include: the collection and inspection of the clues pertaining to Olympic IPR infringement information. At the same time, publicity for the protection of the Olympic intellectual right will be conducted.
Liu Yan, Deputy Director of the Legal Affairs Department of the BOCOG said: "There are cases after cases of advertisement and trademark infringement acts, such as the "Olympic T-Shirt", and the "Beibei Biscuits", even the word "Olympic" is used for the Chinese drugs for establishing male's Yang function (afrodyn). These acts have seriously infringed upon the legitimate rights and interests of the owner and licencee of the Olympic marks and undermined the healthy and orderly development of the Olympic market." He hoped that the legal volunteers will actively and energetically collect the information pertaining to Olympic IPR infringement. And at the same time, he appealed that the broad masses of citizens will take part in the action of protecting the Olympic international property right.
It is said that at present, legal volunteers for the pro-phase Olympic Games will be recruited. For each phase, 70 legal volunteers will be recruited and they will work for a period of half-of-a-year. All in all, five phases will be organized. The entire work will be ended by August 8, 2008, the very day when the Olympic Games opens. It is estimated that 350 lawyers/times will join in the voluntary service. The recruitment of the pro-phase legal volunteers for the 2008 Olympic Games has started on September 20, And they will be recruited from among the lawyers who are residents of Beijing.
According to the briefings given by Zhou Lin, the responsible person concerned of the Beijing Lawyers' Association, "The legal volunteers of the Olympic Games will make initial screening after collecting the information pertaining to Olympic IPR infringement, and then they will submit the information to the Legal Affairs Department of the BOCOG via internet. Meanwhile, the legal volunteers will hold their half-a-day regular meeting on a monthly basis, at which, their work experience will be exchanged.
