Zheng Hong, Winner of China's 9th Patent Gold Medal
Zheng Hong, from Wen County of Henan Province, is the first Chinese man to be recorded in world rolling mill manufacturing history because of his invention of Two-dimensional Control Bending Rolling Mill, a machine able to roll steel sheet as thin as 0.03 mm.
Granted by WIPO and SIPO for breaking the limits of traditional rolling mills in rolling thickness, Zheng's mill can provide qualified steel sheets for mobile, automobile, astronautic industries as well as other hi-tech industries.
LED Chip Production Line Put into Operation in Langfang
On August 28, a ceremony to celebrate the formal operation of a LED chip production line was held in the Tsinghua Scientific and Technological Park, which is located in Langfang, Hebei Province. Mr. Bai Keming, the Provincial Party Secretary, Mdm. Deng Nan, senior leader of Chinese Association of Science and Technology, Mr. Xiang Huaicheng, President of China National Social Security Foundation, Gu Binglin, Principal of Tsinghua University and Mr. Guo Gengmao, Executive Vice Governor of Hebei Province attended the ceremony and paid a visit to the line.
LED is a semi-conduct lighting component, and comparing with traditional light sources, is less harmful to environment, save power and enjoy longer life. As LED is one of most prospective industries in the world, and has aroused wide concern in the whole world, China has listed it as one of the key sectors in its science and technology development program in 11th Five-Year Plan period. Tsinghua Development and Research Academy in Hebei province began the research in 2004 and as a result of contacts with foreign companies and institutes, at the end of 2005, the academy established Langfang Tsinghua Science and Technology Park Photoelectronic Co. Ltd., a Sino-foreign joint venture. Right now, the company has finished infrastructural construction and produced well-qualified products, which are examined to reach international level by an authorized Chinese examination organization.
China Made Achievement In Cornea Reservation Technology
On September 1st, Mr. Xie Lixin, Director of Shandong Provincial Institute of Ophthalmology and a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, was granted 2006 China Outstanding Ophthalmology Achievement Award. Prof. Xie said in his report at the awarding ceremony that China's cornea reservation technology laid the foundation for the development of China's eye bank after the law about cornea donation was formulated. Cooperated with the Chemical Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mr. Xie has invented many new medicines, and four of his ophthalmologic medicines have obtained National Invention Patents.
Reservation of cornea is a very complicated process, while the active reservation is the crucial part in the process. In 1987, Mr. Xie invented the first active reservation fluid with umbilical cord blood serum in China, and after years of experiment, in 1997 he, together with Prof. Dong Xiaoguang, succeeded in researching DX Medium-Term Cornea Reservation Fluid, extending the reservation duration from 4 days to 14 days but only costing one fifth of the imported one. Right now the fluid has been widely adopted in China and earned National Invention Patent. In 2002, the two professors invented cornea organ culturing reservation fluid, becoming the leader in China in this field. The new method enables cornea active within 4 weeks, and now has been utilized in hospitals. Therefore China's cornea reservation technology in eye banks has reached international level.
In addition, Prof. Xie and scientists from the Chemical Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences have also worked out many other medicines with their own IP, contributing a lot to the development of Chinese medical science.
