Indonesia to Host Int'l Meeting on Traditional Knowledge, Folklore Protection

An international meeting aimed at seeking efforts to protect genetic resources, traditional knowledge and folklore is scheduled to be held in Bali, Indonesia, from Nov. 23 to 27, a statement released by the Indonesian foreign affairs ministry said here on Friday.

The meeting, entitled "Meeting on the Like-Minded Countries (LMCs) on International Legal Instrument for the Protection of Generic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore", would be attended by delegates of 33 countries and experts from World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), World Trade Organization (WTO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and South Center, it said.

Indonesian government expected the meeting to produce initial international legal instrument draft that would be used as "text-based negotiation" toward the making of international legal instrument to protect the Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore of countries joined in the meeting.

The draft resulted from the upcoming meeting is expected to be handed over to WIPO General Assembly meeting scheduled in 2011.

The draft would be used as materials to be considered by the WIPO General Assembly prior to its Diplomatic Conference expected to adopt the legal instrument to protect the Genetic resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore of the LMCs members scheduled to take place in 2012.
