Chapter III PCT International Applications

1.Receiving of PCT International Applications

In 2005, the Office received 2,438 international applications, 846 more than 2004. Among those received, 2,233 used Chinese as the working language and 205 used English as the working language.  In the same year, the Office also searched 31 applications received by the International Bureau and 27 by other receiving offices.  In 2005, 19 applications withdrawn on the applicants' initiative and 1 deemed as withdrawn, 328 were related to electricity, 280 to materials mechanics, 320 to mechanics, 765 to telecommunications, 251 to pharmaceuticals, 139 to chemistry, 412 to optronics. Of all the PCT international applications in 2005, 61% were service inventions.

2. PCT International Searching

In 2005, as an International Searching Authority under the PCT, the Office established searching reports for 2,279 international applications, and communicated them respectively to the International Bureau of WIPO and the applicants according to the prescribed time limits of the PCT. At the same time, 9 notices announcing not establishing international searching reports had been sent. 

3. PCT International Preliminary Examination

In 2005, in the process of conducting international preliminary examinations, the Office received 446 demands for international preliminary examination. 662 preliminary examination reports were made and were communicated to the International Bureau and to the applicants.

4. PCT International Applications Entering the Designated and Elected Office

In 2005, the Office received 40,804 international applications designating China and entering into China's national phase, 43 of which were for utility models and 40,761 for patents for inventions, with an increase of 8,336 comparing with 2004.

According to statistics cited in the pamphlet published by WIPO, 130,000 international applications were received by WIPO's International Bureau in 2005, 7.69% up over the previous year and 92,356 international applications were published by the International Bureau in 2005.
