Video Conferencing Between CNIPA Commissioner Shen Changyu and WIPO Director General-Elect Daren Tang

 

On May 28, CNIPA Commissioner Shen Changyu and WIPO Director General-elect Daren Tang had a video conference. Both sides shared opinions on deepening the cooperation between CNIPA and WIPO and promoting balanced, inclusive and effective development of global intellectual property system.

Shen Changyu congratulated Daren Tang on his election as the next Director General of WIPO. He pointed out that 2020 marks the 40th anniversary of China's accession to WIPO. Over the past 40 years, the two sides have established traditional friendship and achieved fruitful outcomes through close cooperation. Strong on intellectual property, China has been one of the major users of WIPO's global IP systems. China will continue working together with WIPO to better serve the system users, uphold multilateralism and protect IP rights through innovation and further economic globalization. He stated that WIPO will lay more stress on IP development, continue to implement the development agenda, and proactively address the needs of developing countries.  At this critical moment marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, CNIPA is willing to work with WIPO to cope with challenges, so that intellectual property can play its unique role in combating the disease. Shen Changyu also remarked that CNIPA will continue to consolidate and strengthen friendly cooperation with IPOS.

Daren Tang said that in recent years, countries of Northeast Asia, especially China, have improved their innovation capability. As China ranked first in PCT applications for the first time last year, Tang hoped that it will play a more significant role in WIPO affairs. CNIPA is always an important partner of WIPO. Over the years, through joint efforts, WIPO and CNIPA have maintained sound cooperation by carrying out fruitful IP projects. He also remarked his wish to continue in-depth cooperation between the two sides after taking office. In addition, Daren Tang stressed on his attention to IP development, wishing to make the global IP systems more inclusive, balanced and effective to benefit all countries in the world. During the conference, he reviewed the profound friendship with CNIPA during his tenure as IPOS Commissioner, and hoped that the IP cooperation between the two sides will continue to deepen.

CNIPA Deputy Commissioner Gan Shaoning also attended the meeting.
